• Open My Computer
• Double-click the drive where Windows is installed (usually drive (C:), unless   you have more than one drive on your computer).
• If the contents of the drive are hidden, under System Tasks, click Show the   contents of this drive.
• Double-click the Documents and Settings folder.
• Double-click your user folder.
• Right-click any folder in your user profile, and then click Properties.
• On the Sharing tab, select the Make this folder private so that only I have   access to it check box.


Note

• To open My Computer, click Start, and then click My Computer.
• This option is only available for folders included in your user profile.   Folders in your user profile include My Documents and its subfolders, Desktop,   Start Menu, Cookies, and Favorites. If you do not make these folders private,   they are available to everyone who uses your computer.
• When you make a folder private, all of its subfolders are private as well. For   example, when you make My Documents private, you also make My Music and My   Pictures private. When you share a folder, you also share all of its   subfolders unless you make them private.
•You cannot make your folders private if your drive is not formatted as NTFS For information about converting your drive to NTFS

Steps you need to follow:

Click on the system log and find the time when your PC was last on


You can now check everything including when your computer was On ,Off,Sleeped ,Logged on and off etc.

If you have important documents ;-) and you are afraid about its privacy then do not be worried because windows XP provides (not officially) a utility by which u can hide your PC’s one or more drives....



1. Go to Start > run > type diskpart.
A dos window will appear with following.
DISKPART>
2. Then type list volume
This will look like it
Volume### Ltr Label Fs Type Size Status Info etc in a row and details beneath.
Volume 0 F DC-ROM
Volume 1 C NTFS Partition 7000MB Healthy
Volume 2 D soft NTFS Partition 8000MB Healthy
Volume 3 E —- NTFS Partition 8000MB Healthy
3. If u wanna hide drive E then type select volume 3 and hit enter.
Then a message will appear in same winwods {Volume 3 is the selected volume}
4. Now type remove letter E
A message will come {Diskpart Removed the Drive letter}
Sometime it requires the reboot the computer. And your E drive is vanished from sight.....



Diskpart will remove the letter. Windows XP is not having capabilty to identify the unkown volume.

Now Do not be afraid. Your data will ramain safe.
To revert changes, repeat the process . but in 4th step replace “remove” with “assign”
I mean type “assign letter E”

Your drive will reappear again.

The bios can be protected with a password to prevent others from accessing its settings. You have to enter the password to be able to access it, if you can’t provide the correct one the access gets denied. The following method describes a way to recover the password if you forgot it or bought a used computer with a bios password.CmosPwd is a free program that is able to display information about the bios once it is executed.

You do need to create a bootable disk to be able to execute the program in dos mode. To create a bootable disk in windows right-click the disk drive and select format from the list of options. It is important that you enable the option Create an MS-DOS startup disk.Once the disk is created copy the contents from the dos folder of cmos pwd to the disk and restart the computer.



You will have to remove all hard drives from the system if you do not automatically boot from disk drive. Type cmospwd.exe in the command line and the password should appear. Ignore the information about the other bios manufacturers and take a look at the one your computer is using.Another possible method would be to start the computer in safe mode with command prompt which could work as well. You still need to access the files somewhere so make sure that the hard drive is accessible.

No computer program is 100% safe. Any program, no matter how good the programmer behind it was, can be hacked. Even big companies, the ones that have hundreds of technicians and programmers, are still vulnerable to hackers. Just take a look at the most recent hacks on one of the most widely used pieces of software in the world, Microsoft Word.

According to Microsoft officials last Tuesday, hackers are now exploiting a vulnerability in Microsoft Word in order to plant malware on Windows PCs. The bug, found in Microsoft Word 2002, 2003, 2007 and 2010, was patched back on November 9th, 2010, as a part of Microsoft's monthly security update.

Word 2008 and 2011 for the Mac have been patched as well, however, Microsoft has not yet issued a fix for the same flaw in Word 2004. The attacks, on the other hand, only affect Windows versions of the suite.

According to the Microsoft Malware Protection Center (MMPC), which is the group that investigates attack codes and also issues signature updates for the company's antivirus software, the first exploits were found last week. When the Word patch was shipped last month, the bug was rated as a "1" on the exploitability index. What that number means is that a working attack would manifest within 30 days.

The attack uses a malicious Rich Text Format (RTF) file to generate a stack overflow in Word on Windows, according to MMPC researcher Rodel Finones. Once a successful exploit takes place, the attack codes download and run a Trojan horse on the PC. Microsoft rated this RTF vulnerability as "critical" in Word 2007 as well as 2010 last month. However it was only listed as "important" in all other affected versions.

It is thought that this bug was a hacker choice due to the fact that users running Office 2007 or 2010 could be attacked if they made the simple mistake of previewing a specially-crafted RTF document in the Outlook e-mail client.

According to Jason Miller, the Data and Security Team Manager for Shavik Technologies, "Once a malformed message hits the Outlook preview pane, remote code can be executed. You should patch this right away." This is what he said when Microsoft released the patch.

Finones stated that the code "reliably exploits this Word vulnerability" and also urged users who have yet to install the November patch to do so immediately.

If XP will not install from the CD or if you have a new drive with no operating system on
it yet try these:

Install Windows XP from the hard drive with Windows 98 already installed:

Boot Windows 98
Insert the XP CD into your CD reader
Explore Windows XP through My Computer
Copy i386 folder to C:\
Go into C:\i386 folder and double click on winnt32.exe to launch the setup from the hard drive

Install Windows XP from DOS (ie. no OS on a new hard drive):

Boot with a Windows 98 Start Up disk
Insert the Windows 98 CD into the CD reader
Run smartdrv.exe from the Win98 directory on the windows 98 CD (file caching)
Type cd.. to back up to the root directory
Insert Windows XP CD into the CD reader
Copy the i386 folder to C:\
Go into C:\i386 folder on C: and type winnt.exe to launch the setup from the hard drive
